"Choosing the right roofing company in Hampton Roads"
Not too long ago I was heading towards my last estimate of the day. When I arrived, an elderly woman answer the door, I told her I was there to do a roof estimate. After I took some measurements on the roof she actually invited me inside her home and offered me a cup of tea, she was very nice and had a beautiful house full of pictures of her family. We had a long conversation for over an hour and she told me that her husband had passed away not too long ago and that she was left with the task of fixing things around the house or hiring people to do it. The house itself wasn't that old, it was a "newer" development in the Virginia Beach area. Most houses in her neighborhood were around 20 years old and had 3tab contractor grade shingles installed (the lowest quality). Most of her neighbors had already replaced their roofs by now, she had just been postponing it because she didn't want to deal with it. She had been paying a handy man to do repairs every time she noticed a leak. Like many homeowners, she knew very little about roofing, roofing installation or roofing materials. Roofing is a major purchase, it usually ranges in the several thousands, so it is important to make the right decision when it comes down to replacing your roof or fixing it. Choosing the right company and materials is crucial because if you do it right it might be the last roof you have to install since most manufactures are guaranteeing some of their materials for 40 years or Lifetime.
Some of the things I talked about with this homeowner, among her grandchildren and her family, was that she was advised to get at least 3 estimates. I told her that it was a good advice and that most of our clients get even more. I told her one time we got a big job in Chesapeake Va. installing in a 5850sq foot house. Well, this homeowner had twelve estimates! We weren't the lowest price (there was 3 other roofing contractors cheaper that us) but we were the only ones that actually got on the roof and identified all the problems that they had in the past and came up with solutions to improve her new roof and to avoid those same problems in the years to come. I explained to her also that it was very important to do her homework, do some research about the companies, and read their reviews online, also was this company a referral from a friend or family member that used their services It's also important to see some of their work, go to one of their job-sites while they are there doing an installation, and make sure they got all their company documentations up to date (insurance, business license, etc). Even calling some of their old customers would be helpful (many of our clients have done that). Do at least one or two of these things and you will avoid "big headaches" in the future.
Well, I gave her the estimate that day. She called me a few times that week to ask me different things about the estimate. I could tell that she had actually been doing her homework because she was asking me things only a roofing contractor would know, things about the underlayment, what's the difference between 15 pound felt and 30 pound felt, how many nails we used per shingle and things like that. She asked me also if we could repair the roof instead of replacing it, as a roofer I knew that doing repairs on a 20+ year old roof can be a nightmare, shingles will never match so that's going to be a huge "eye sore" for the homeowners. Another important thing is the tie-in between the old shingles and the new ones, it is almost impossible to lift shingles that are that old without breaking them and causing a chain reaction in damage or make them seal to the new shingles. I told her that she had some water infiltrations for quite some time and there was going to be some wood deck that had to be replaced and possibly some structural damage. I told her if she waited any longer she would end up spending more money in the long run.
At the end of the week she called me again to let me know that we were awarded the job. I was very happy because I had helped this homeowner gain education in our field and she was about to get a beautiful roof. She told me that our price wasn't the lowest but that our estimate was very explanatory with details and that I actually took the time to explain every question she had. After getting the permit from the city we arrived the day we had promised and replaced her roof. By the time we finished the job she gave a tip to every one of my crew members and was very happy that we actually took the time to lay tarps all around her property to protect every one of her flower beds. We also took pictures of every piece of wood that was damaged to show her since she could not get on her roof to see for herself. She gave us a great review online also. We love these type of clients!
